ORAL PATHOLOGY AND ORAL CANCER TREATMENT

Through his career, Dr. Momtaheni observed many patients with Oral Cancer and their treatments.  Many invasive procedures resulted in having the patients become deformed and handicapped.  He thought there must be a better way to treat these patients.  He observed that when patients have Colon Cancer, the surgeon does not remove the entire Colon.  His observations led him to adapt minimally invasive surgical treatments for his patients.  Therefore, his minimally invasive treatment would be the resection of the cancer, immediate reconstruction and, in some cases, post-operative radiation therapy.  The results are the same as radical surgery without deformity and being dentally crippled.

Besides being a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Momtaheni is an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist.  There are only 16 specialists in the United States who have these dual specialties.  These two specialties enable him to both identify and treat oral cancers and oral pathologies.

In December 1996 while undergoing a routine cleaning of my teeth, a red lesion was discovered on my soft palate.  My dentist immediately sent me to Dr. Momtaheni.  Dr. Momtaheni took a biopsy which was diagnosed as Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.  Surgery was recommended and in January 1997, Dr. Momtaheni performed a wide excision of the tumor at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan.  Skin was taken from the inside of my cheek to cover the hole left by the surgery.  The hole closed in a few weeks which just left a scar and no deformity.  The final diagnosis was Stage II going into Stage III

 

Radiation therapy was recommended as I did not want additional surgery.  I had 25 external radiation treatments, a two week rest, followed by HDR brachytherapy as an in-patient in the hospital for five days twice a day.

 

It is 18 years this month since the surgery and I am still here to talk about it.
